Roles
Unit of Inquiry
Kinder A/R
is learning how people play different roles in our Community. We started off by
asking the children about their families and how each family member plays a
different role or has different responsibilities. They were proud to share
their thoughts and created houses with pop out windows detailing roles and
actions that take place in their homes. How do you help? Who helps you in your family? What roles
are played within your family?
“I
wash the dishes”.“I
clean up my toys”.“Io
metto apposto il letto”.
“Mom
cooks dinner”.“Dad
feeds the cat”.
They then moved onto discovering roles within the school. The children each had a chance to interview and ask questions to people in our school community.
They came up with questions like: What is your job? Why is your role important?
After a few provocations, the students quickly realized and understood that each staff member plays an important role by providing a safe, learning environment.
As a provocation Ms. Nadia the lunch helper pretended to be absent. The children quickly realized that it would be a problem if Ms. Nadia was not with us everyday. They had to come up with a solution very quickly and they decided to take on her job.
Community walk
The children in Kinder asked many questions about their community, for example; what is a community? What roles do people play in our community? How do people and their roles affect us at school or at home? The students became little detectives for the day and took a walk around our neighbourhood. They discovered many different places and met many new people that were excited to share their expertise. They were thrilled by the experience and expressed a deep appreciation for the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the neighbourhood and the people belong to it.
Special Guests
Kinder A/R had some very special guests come visit the classroom. The children were very enthusiastic and excited to meet “real people with real jobs”. The students gained valuable insight from their discussions and activities and it was a great opportunity for them to learn about the roles that some parents/adults have in their everyday life.
Thank you for your visit!

They discovered that by changing their voices and their expressions they were able to imitate or disguise themselves. They stepped into the life of Mr. Giusti for the day and experimented different acting techniques.

With Dr. Colucci they experimented with a stethoscope, they listened and counted their heartbeats. “My heart beats so fast!” They also asked many questions for example, “where do you work, in the Doctor’s office or the hospital?’’ “ Why do Doctor’s wear white?”
They stepped into the life of a Doctor for the day and enjoyed dressing up and sharing their understanding.
